In April 2016, the GSMA published a case study of SIM-based tokenisation as designed and implemented by Orange in France and T-Mobile Poland. Aimed chiefly at mobile operators, operator suppliers and a number of other ecosystem players, the study provides a clear framework for those in France and Poland seeking to deploy SIM-based tokenisation services in the future and gives a thorough account of Orange and T-Mobile Poland’s technical and business decisions on the subject to date.
With rapid proliferation of tokenisation, operator integration with token service providers (TSPs) is paramount, and operators are increasingly conscious of the benefits that partnerships with payment schemes can afford when seeking to provision a tokenisation service. With this in mind, Orange and T-Mobile Poland have been able to shape the SIM-based tokenisation solution – devised by the GSMA and a number of operators – to their respective markets.
The case study demonstrates the clear need for a tokenisation solution to be scalable and interoperable. It is emphasised that an infrastructure built to support a new tokenisation service must be capable of serving as many actors – and use cases – as possible. A number of examples are provided: tokenisation services must be safeguarded from future handset OS updates, and must be able to support value-added services (particularly with regard to banking applications – a need for future input from banks as to how this may be best achieved is suggested).
The study explains how to maintain high grade security and payment simplicity for SIM-based payment solutions – crucial to scale. With security and ease of use inherent to tokenisation and a consistently high priority for consumers, the case study provides numerous guidelines regarding data protection and processing of payments, as well as recommendations of suitable app interface structure.
